HAKUHO MARU is a large-scale research vessel which was transferred to JAMSTEC from the University of Tokyo's Ocean Research Institute in 2004, coinciding with the inauguration of JAMSTEC.
The vessel conducts research cruises around the world, not only in the waters around Japan but also in the Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean Sea and Polar Seas.
The vessel is equipped with various observational equipment and research laboratories and is designed in detail in order to conduct advanced research cruises, low vibration engines and low noise screw propellers are examples among many others.
